MVMA Internship Program
This program was started in summer 2005 as a way to expose college students to Vietnamese American community needs while gaining valuable skills about the nonprofit sector.

Interns will be given the opportunity to meet and network with local, state, and national non-profit organizations as well as leaders in the DC metropolitan area through trainings, community meetings, and conferences. Academic credits are also available upon request. A small stipend is available during the summer time.

MVMA offers summer, spring, fall, and winter internship. Interns’ primary responsibilities are to assist MVMA staff with organizing community and cultural events, compiling research and statistic data, providing direct immigration and referral services to our clients, participating in advocacy work, and doing general administrative duties. Depending on an intern’s interest, she or he may specialize on topic pertaining to family life, senior care, or health care.

Current and past interns speak about their internship experience:

“Interning for MVMA and having the opportunity to reach out to the Vietnamese community has been a rewarding experience. I learned that although we are not miracle workers, our ability to help with small family problems is enough to make a difference.”
Pha Le Le, University of Maryland at College Park,
Summer 2006 Intern.

"My internship at MVMA has been a unique experience. I am able to work closely with the Vietnamese Community and make a difference."
Bich Le, Trinity College, CT, Summer 2006 Intern

“I hope to interact with the Vietnamese community much more. I hope to grasp the language and traditions first in the States. After learning more about our people, I hope to travel to Vietnam so that I can try my best to better the medical situation there. I also hope to gain more leadership, oral speaking, communication, public service, and organizational skills.”
Tram Nguyen, Smith College, MA, Summer 2006 Intern

“My internship at the Maryland Vietnamese Mutual Association, Inc has exceeded my expectation. I have been exposed to all aspects of MVMA’s services and projects from translation and immigration to grant writing and project development. I am involved in the combination of resource development, project development and administrative work. Besides, the work experience, I also got the privilege to attend grant writing training, networking workshops, community leader workshop and the NAVASA banquet. Not only the work experience and the training I received, interning MVMA is my great way to enjoy your summer. Every Tuesday when I am assigned to attend the weekly meeting of the Vietnamese Senior Association, I feel the warmth of love and kindness from my parents and grandparents.”
Thuy Nguyen, University of Maryland of College Park,
Summer 2005 Intern
